Explosion Proof Castings

This aluminum casting is for an actuator. The raw permanent mold casting is machined into a standard version or an explosion-proof version.

Why Explosion-Proof?

These castings are designed to contain and mitigate explosions in hazardous environments with flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dusts.

Some industries such as oil and gas, mining, or chemical, need explosion-proof products. These components help meet OSHA regulations, prevent secondary explosions, and keep people, equipment, and facilities safe.

What Makes Castings Explosion-Proof?

Low porosity permanent mold aluminum casting paired with precision machining can manufacture explosion-proof products.

Low-Porosity

The key to explosion-proof products is dense, low-porosity castings.

Permanent mold casting is known for its dense castings. The gravity tilt pour process and permanent mold gating systems create less metal turbulence than sand or die casting, generating less porosity. We also monitor the gas level and temperature of the melt to ensure a dense casting without hydrogen bubbles, inclusions, or shrinkage porosity.

Machining

After pouring, this casting goes through a machining operation. To create an explosion-proof product, they need to machine low-porosity permanent mold castings. After machining, the casting must be pressure-tight and leak-free!

Castings must be well sealed to prevent leakage of gases or dust that could ignite an explosion.

Design

Explosion-proof castings are typically designed with thicker walls and reinforced structures to prevent rupturing.

This casting has a study, strong design with thick walls.

Material

To be explosion-proof, the material must be able to withstand high temperatures and pressures.

Aluminum A356 is known for its strength and heat resistance, making it the perfect alloy for this casting.

Corrosion Resistance

In harsh environments where explosion-proof products are necessary, castings must have good corrosion resistance to withstand over time. Aluminum is known for its great durability and can be anodized or powder coated to further enhance its corrosion resistance.
